Her ...At the staid Marcia Blaine School for Girls in Edinburgh, Scotland, teacher extraordinaire Miss Jean Brodie is unmistakably, and outspokenly, in her prime. Not that she isn't now, but there are no qualifiers on the younger her. This is possibly the perfect Muriel Spark book, compact and devastating and funny. It holds true with The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Unfortunately, the other girls don't have the where-with-all to be what she wishes.

I found that I could not read the passages where Miss Brodie speaks unless my inner ear rendered them in the voice of the inimitable Maggie Smith.

But her students come to realize that her love of art and admiration of Mussolini have blinded her to the real implications of romantic idealism. The passages where Jean Brodie speaks, did not come to life unless I allowed this rhythmic Edinburgh melody to prevail. You think she is going to be the hero of a sentimental romance as she bucks the backward and narrow-minded establishment...but she turns out to have some dark corners of her own. In this way the movie presents a profound, sophisticated and realistic account of the way powerful individuals influence one another. After reading the one and two star reviews on Amazon, I think that people don't realize that this is a book about ethics/morals. Was this review helpful? As it turns out, it only bore a passing resemblance to the novella it was based on. But in this novel Muriel Spark shows us she's not a great fan of idealism.

She is passionate in the application of her unorthodox teaching methods and strives to bring out the best in each one of her students. It first saw publication in The New Yorker magazine and was published as a book by Macmillan in 1961. Miss Brodie is far less sympathetic than the film version and is much better. it was made into a movie starring Maggie Smith and b.) Maggie Smith, a true thespian treasure, shows her stuff in this delightful 1969 film. Early on, we see how she coaches and encourages their precocity in things intellectual and sexual. Maggie's mannerism, now a precious trade mark, belong to Miss Brodie, totally. She paints the blind monstrosity of Miss Jean Brodie in the most recognizable human tones.
