What [the film] does best is take all that frustration and put it into one man's story. except for this one, i've never come across a Romanian movie that i could completely "believe" in terms of acting. I should add, while it describes itself as a dark comedy drama, it isn't obviously funny (filled with gags or jokes) but incredibly subtle. We do hate drunken, we do hate patients who are still ruining themselves despite of their fatal medical history (that's why I became a pediatrician), we do hate those folks who think they know better than us, we do hate a stretcher coming in at 3 in the morning and even worse when we're leaving our shift, etc.

The entire cast delivers solid performances, specially Fiscuteanu as the remarkable Lazarescu Dante Remus and Luminita Gheorghiu as the paramedic. I found this title on a list of outstanding foreign films. I thought the film, above all was a brilliantly crafted, perfectly paced film. Very moving experience. The unyielding rhythm of this film made me alternatively laugh at the irony of it all, burst into tears at the pitiless cynicism, wither with contempt.. and I could hardly contain myself from thumping my feet on the floor, giving an outcry of painful edginess, or from simply throwing something at the hard-hearted screen... Pity. What I found most intriguing was the power dynamics in the whole medial system and then by extension in the society. Was this review helpful? It is rather hard for this movie theme to put 5 hours of action in only one and a half; a theme where every detail, every word, and every expression of their faces matter. Essentially following a hellish night of a lout who gets head and chest pains and then dares to call the ambulance and better yet, dares to go to a hospital. I just saw this one yesterday evening on TV and I am still under its influence.
