Philosophical writing is hard and different from other types of writing- so you will probably struggle a bit trying to change your writing style but because it is an intro class everyone is learning alongside you.I took this class as a GE, so it definitely filled its purpose. Essay grades, as I've heard, vary a decent amount based on your TA, although they do cooperate with grading.The papers are not very long, as the shortest is 3-4 pages, and the longest is 6-7.

There are also assigned readings (not from a textbook), but by the end of the quarter the amount of people doing them... diminished.

Even though I was intrigued by some of the philosophers we covered, I couldn't help but find my attention drifting off. Submitted March 30, 2020 Reading/writing heavy class, dense.Professor Gallagher is super sweet, but yes her lectures can be long and boring. Submitted June 6, 2019 Fall 2018 I, personally, was not interested by the subject matter to begin with, and to add to that she is a very soft spoken/unexciting lecturer, so I stopped going around week 5. Get the bear truth.

The homework load was not too bad at all.

I personally felt that the final's Part 1 multiple choice was trickier and I regretted not reading the slides in more depth, something I didn't expect to have to do given that I had already put in a significant amount of effort into knowing each author's arguments quite well and her main points. However, every single thing that she mentions during lecture will come up on the midterm and the final with almost the same wording.

However, she explains everything really clearly during lecture so I personally don't think doing every single reading is necessary, just make sure you do the reading for the prompt you're going to write for your papers. We hate annoying ads just as much as you do,

Lecture was kind of boring because of the content, but she does her best. You get the grade that you work for and it's pretty fair. However with that being said it's not that difficult to just listen to lecture which summarizes the ideas of the readings (very succinctly and well).
