Really looking forward to seeing more DV in the future.Just watched it recently too. And then the movie just sort of ends.I couldn't help to compare it to a relatively similar twist in Oldboy, but whereas in Oldboy the revelation is essential and basically the solution to the puzzle the entire film built up towards (this is Woo-Jins revenge, not Dae-Su's) and we got to see the entire effect from it (Dae-Su Oh turned into a complete wreck, Woo-Jin Lee realised the revenge didn't help him feel better and killed himself).Yeah, I feel the same way about the final twist because it seems that deus ex machina is used, the mother goes to a swimming pool and coincidentally, by a chance of 1 out of 1 billion, she finds a guy with the tattoo on the leg. He started his career as a filmmaker at the National Film Board of Canada. Don't get me wrong, I think that it was still handled incredibly well (imagine how awful a twist like that could be in the hands of a less skillful director), but our ability to suspend disbelief and lend credence to the power of coincidence carrying to utterly far, it's very tough for an audience to do.Despite all of those drawbacks, I think Incendies is a very good film and has deep emotional resonance with the viewer even after its ended. The story could have very easily gone down the path of most revenge stories and ended with cyclical violence from this event and a net loss for everyone (City of God, Oldboy, Sicario, etc). Not my favorite Villenueve film but a good start for someone who isn't that into foreign films. It was on tv a couple of months ago over here but the swedish name for the movie was so bad so I didn't check it out.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve. The first "twist" about htem being children of rape was fine. If the end goal is to have both sides from the conflict broken down by the events, regretting what happened, and at peace with the results instead of continuing the revenge, it's tough to think of a powerful way to get there. It was fittingly dark and disturbing, and carried an additional both emotional and existential weight to the characters. Denis Villeneuve is a French Canadian film director and writer. It's the same thing as a Quentin Tarantino fan saying I love his films but I haven't seen Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs.I think everyone who says they love Tarantino has seen those two at the very least. This time we’re also making a video out of this AMA, which will go on Netflix's YouTube next week. It was harrowing, it was beautiful, it was gripping - simply an unbelievably well told story.I just watched Manchester by the Sea this past Sunday and then watched Incendies last night and simply put- I thought it blew it out of the water. This is definitely one of those movies I won't ever watch again (others being requiem for a dream, changeling)...not because they were bad movies but because I couldn't handle what I felt after watching them.A common mark I use to gauge whether a piece of art is "good" is whether it can make me feel complex emotions. With Lubna Azabal, Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin, Maxim Gaudette, Mustafa Kamel. "If you enjoy the movies of Denis Villeneuve, watch a Denis Villeneueve movie"Absolutely agreed in this case, however I just noticed how Oliver Stone for me is completely different in that regard. What other directors consistently nail films in vastly different genres? It's a clever way of telling the story, it lets the story advance to see the aftermath of the events years later, creates consistent tension and mystery, they are more relate-able to the audience since they are discovering how this world works with them. ":s and it overall just kinda sucked. I went into Incendies with high hopes as Sicario and Arrival are in the top 10 list of movies I have seen in the past 3 or 4 years. If it could have been done that it wasn't a chance discovery that would be ideal, but I think it does work.I completely agree that the mother is the main character, and I definitely think it was a clever idea worth pursuing, but I think the execution falls flat. The problem is that the emotional heft of the film isn't carried by the main character.
It definitely deserved that Oscar win.I have seen (the?) But that still leaves the issue of a divorcing of the plot's focus from the emotional heft of the films ending.Idk if any of this made much sense as its my first time trying to do any kind of reviewing. What I can say I liked about the movie, and quite a bit at that, is its sense of place and ability to capture the feel of war as well as the diaspora. 8. The pool scenes in particular did a great job of capturing the melting pot that is modern day Canada.Nawal (the mother) is the main character. As a live theater performance (Incendies is a 4 hour play FYI), I can see the reveal knocking the audience out.
