[I assumed it was one of Mitchell's guns that Joe uses at the end of the book... I’m really at a loss to understand why this novella shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2012 did not win it. Taking place in 1994 over a week in a French holiday resort, the novel centres around stuttering botanist and exhibitionist depressive Kitty Finch and her interaction with a ragbag of unlikeable snobs, poets and snotty brats. If you avoid the temptation to rush through it, you find that the dots you have joined at the end are not all in the book. This is a short book, a novella. I am so done with this book.3.5 Not quite sure what to make of this little gem of a book.

Emma Straub was all set to spend May on tour promoting her new novel, All Adults Here. Like her 1995 book The characters were flat, undifferentiated. What we see is all there is so we have to make of it what we can. There’s just such an entrancing quality to Deborah Levy’s writing. Isabel is a Meanwhile, Kitty's mental problems become more and more obvious, yet Nina is the only one who dares to address the issue. Published Are we reading or watching? The pervading scent of menace in this novel is overpowering and disquieting.

There is a visual quality to her work that makes the reader blink.

Like her 1995 book This queer, disquieting novel blends a dark, surreal Topor-topos with a Hollywood noir of forties vintage. Swimming home (Nuotando verso casa) è la dodicesima e ultima traccia del terzo omonimo album degli Evanescence, pubblicato il 11 ottobre del 2011. And it isn't about the book much either. Every sentence being concise and well crafted and creates a narrative that is devastating in its effects.Relationships between family, friends and a mysterious stranger are explored in uneasy detail in this compact and memorable read.

We’d love your help. A family holiday turns to a disaster when a stereotypical ‘manic, dream pixie girl’ turns up as a crazy fan of the poet father.
Most of all I was sucked in and fell under its magical little spell. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. As it turns out, Kitty's mental issues were just a reflection of his much more deep-founded depression. Regardless, Kitty Finch is a truly original character, and it's a novel (or more reasonably, a novella) that makes one ponder and think, and it's one I will probably re-read somewhere down the line. It’s all quite predictable but full of suspense. The short novel deals with the experiences of poet Joe Jacobs, when his family vacation is interrupted by a fanatical reader. Are we reading or watching? The thing was, she must have actually cut the tails off the rabbits herself.

Every word, every scene means something, nothing is wasted. [the novel is in fact if anything a warning against doing this, a caveat lector, but one with that is rendered very beautifully and ultimately with some shot at redemption].

Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. Welcome back. I've been putting off this review because Swimming Home has me a little stymied. 'Swimming Home' is a subversive page-turner, a merciless gaze at the insidiuos harm that depression can have on apparently stable, well-turned-out people. But there is no way to talk about this book without giving something away.

I really wanted to love this book, and I did love Levy's writing, her prose is masterful - conveying character, setting, and insight in small spare beautifully crafted paragraphs. The tension in the novel is palpable and at times downright unconformable.

Swimming Home is a steal: with just 157 pages, this little book packs an incredible punch. Please feel free to flag it.What a peculiar little book? Being on the Man Booker long list, this is a quintessential Booker type book; Beautiful writing, weird ‘literary’ type characters and a half finished plot filled with unease.
